Rootz Café presents Dr. Velvet at Kim’s Kroeg 13 March’26

Amsterdam’s latest sensation DOCTOR VELVET gives you the rock ‘n roll medicine you need! While still young, they’ve already brewed a steamy, intoxicating potion filled with just the right ingredients: a drop of blood from The Sonics, a hair of Little Richard, a slice of boogaloo and a big shot of rhythm ‘n blues! DRINK UP!

Bandleaders David and Jerome met during High School where they quickly discovered a likeminded interest for Rock ‘n Roll music. After they got their band together they were picked up by Wap Shoo Wap Records where they would eventually publish their first single in March 2022. In the two years that followed the band released several singles, among which the successful “Road to Nowhere” with ‘the King of Mambo’ Tito Ramírez singing a version on the B-side. The band continued to play with several renowned musicians such as Benjamin Herman, Lucas Santana and Alex Figueira and performed at major venues and festivals like Paradiso, Tolhuistuin and Oerol Festival besides touring in France, UK and Brazil.

All of these experience were then crafted in the works of their debutalbum “New Breed”. In this album the band has managed to create a fresh take on the rhythm ’n blues genre by bringing elements of (latin) soul and 50’s rock ’n roll together with a 60’s vintage sound and feeling. The album is just as dark, brooding and moody as it is danceable. This makes Doctor Velvet stand out from the crowd whilst taking you on an all-night ride through swamps, hazy nightclubs and cursed roads filled with heartbreak.

Doctor Velvet’s Debutalbum “New Breed” is now available on all streaming platforms!

Benjamin Herman op NPO Radio 2: “An ambitious group of young men that has created a perfect blend of rock ‘n roll and boogaloo. And not only do they play great music, they look fantastic as well!”

Concertmonkey.be: “This album provides a mix of  rock ‘n roll from the 50s and Latin soul from the 60s with a vintage but still very fresh sound. The band shows they’re not afraid to experiment with sound and style. Not only did Doctor Velvet show their artistic vision in “New Breed”, they paved the way for their much promising future. (8/10)

Het Parool: “Amazing how the oldschool rock-’n-roll of the young men of Doctor Velvet sounds!”

LIVE REVIEWS

De Nieuwe Revu: “The audience doesn’t wait a second to go out of their minds when Doctor Velvet begins to play infectious rhythm ‘n blues and hard rock’nroll with punk-influences. There’s wild dancing and at the end the audience begs the band for another song. A group of young men in the audience let’s frontman David Grutter, who looks like a modern day James Dean, pour them a sip out of a big bottle of Jack Daniels. Yes, this is Rock ‘n Roll.

Joost van Bellen: “Suprise suprise, Doctor Velvet is awesome!”

3voor12: “Doctor Velvet enters the stage armed with slick hair, shiny instruments, tight leather pants and youtfull energy. De screaming saxophone trades verses with the screams of the frontman and the people are dancing. Rock ‘n roll is perfect for a kind of wild dancing, not headbanging but shaking hips and twisting feet. The audience follows easy, the band leads the way. We haven’t seen something like this in a while!

Blues Alone Magazine: “The show ends with ‘City Jungle’, pure rock ‘n roll takes over the audience for the last time. David’s dirty, meritorious vocals and selfless organ, Jerome’s merciless guitar, the mischievous sexy saxophones, the profitable bass and satisfying drums came, saw and conquered Heyhoef Backstage. Yes, this band is in the ranks of young talented bands such as Gumbo Kings, Marlon Pichel, La Ratte and Dawn Brothers who will gradually replace the old guard… what a good prospect!”
